Memories of my insurance career written from the rocking chair of my California nursing home.

Asphalt Rolling Pin, The Beginning

I can still remember the first time I tried selling insurance in person. After trying to set up an appointment with him for at least a month, I finally got Mr. Ray Bann to agree to see me at a local diner in Miami.

Got his name from the directory. He seemed like a nice man on the phone, although he conveniently forgets who I am every time I call him

“Barney Jefferson? Your name sounds familiar, do I know you from somewhere?”

I think my bull-headed peskiness (on top of my carrot-haired top) finally got his knees buckling, or so I thought.

6 PM. The pipe-in music was playing Billie Holiday’s All of Me when my coffee arrived. I took my time and took just one little sip every five minutes. My eyes were on the prowl for Mr. Bann. He said he was going to wear a green plaid shirt and cream colored pants.

7 PM. I was finishing my third cup and my eyes were still on the prowl for Mr. Bann. Still no sign of him.

8PM. A tall, grey-haired man in a green plad shirt and cream colored pants finally showed up at the door. I stood up and waved, “Hey, Mr. Ray Bann. I’m here!”

Can you imagine? I waved at him like one of them overrated Hollywood brats. That’s how I marked my transformed from office boy to professional insurance agent. I waved. And how I waved. I must’ve been too ecstatic, he couldn’t resist buying a life insurance policy from me.

He signed up and paid the full amount the next day. He died the day after, after getting run over by one of them asphalt rolling pins. No joke. He actually slid over a banana peel when the rolling pin rolled on the road.

I guess he saw it coming. His passing away. I sure was glad I waited for him, otherwise his family would’ve gotten nothing.

And so here is one lesson brough to you with a hit from my cane: you’ll never know when an asphalt rolling pin runs you over. Tell this story to your prospects and you’ll surely turn them into clients.

I know I did.
